So you’re planning to backpack through South America? What a coincidence! A few years back, I was in your shoes, plotting and planning my South American expedition. Today, I’m going to share with you my top tips for backpacking through this stunning continent. Let’s dive in, shall we?
1. Research, research, research
South America is hugely diverse, so it’s worthwhile getting to understand the different layers of its splendid panorama of cultures, history, and landscapes. Start by learning basic phrases in Spanish or Portuguese, depending on your country of interest. I used Duolingo[1] during my prep, and it came in handy when I wanted to engage with local communities!
2. Plan — but not too much
Sometimes, the best experiences come from the unexpected detours along the way. So, while it’s important to have a basic plan, leave some room for flexibility. Remember that bus I missed in Cusco, Peru? Turned into a delightful day connecting with locals at a nearby café!
3. Be budget savvy
Things can be surprisingly cheap or unexpectedly pricey. In countries like Bolivia and Ecuador, your money will go a long way. In other countries, such as Chile and Argentina, you’ll find prices much steeper. Check out resources like Numbeo[2] to find accurate, city-by-city cost of living info.
4. Embrace local cuisine
Wherever I went, I made it a point to try the local specialties — who could resist the scrumptious arepas of Colombia or the empanadas of Argentina? Don’t let unfamiliar dishes intimidate you; they could end up being your new favorite.
5. Respect local cultures and customs
Every place has its own unique customs and traditions. It’s our job as respectful tourists to honor these customs, even if they’re different from our own. In Bolivia, for example, asking permission before taking photos of locals is just a way of showing respect[3].
6. Stay safe
As in any country, safety is crucial. Bag snatching can be a problem, especially in big cities. I always kept my belongings close and stashed important documents and money in hidden pouches. Remember, you’re always safest when you blend in and avoid flashing expensive items around.
7. Enjoy the journey
Backpacking through South America isn’t about ticking off destinations—it’s about experiencing the journey fully and mindfully! If I were you, I wouldn’t rush; soak up the experience and make lasting memories.
Well, that’s it from me today. I hope these tips give you a better idea of what to expect during your South American adventure. Happy backpacking!
