A Culinary Tour of Scandinavia: An Epicurean Journey

Hey there, fellow foodies! Today, we’re embarking on a culinary tour of Scandinavia! A subarctic fairyland of natural treasures, from its striking Northern Lights to its turquoise glaciers, Scandinavia is not only a visual feast but a smorgasbord of culinary delights also waits to be discovered. And yep, I’ve been lucky enough to taste some of it myself.

The Danish Delights

Arriving in Copenhagen, I was immediately interested in trying out Smørrebrød – a classic Danish open-faced sandwich. With a spread of butter or lard on dark rye bread and garnished with almost anything you can think of, Smørrebrød varies from the simple potato and mayo version to quite luxurious versions with shrimp and dill. I couldn’t resist the temptation, and as I took my first bite, the explosion of flavors amazed me.

Suomi Staples: Finnish Cuisine

When I reached the ‘land of a thousand lakes’ – Finland, I had my first encounter with Perunarieska, a Finnish potato flatbread. What really stood out to me though, during my Finnish cuisine adventure, was the Salmiakki – salty licorice flavored with ammonium chloride. It’s a dividing delicacy over there; you either love it or hate it. And let me tell you, I’m definitely a lover!

Striding through Sweden

Next stop on our journey, the chilly abode of Sweden, home of the iconic meatballs. Sweden’s nationally layered cake, Prinsesstårta or Princess Cake, was a revelation. Layers of jam, pastry cream, whipped cream, and a sheet of green marzipan – oh yum!

Navigating Norway

Last but certainly not least, is Norway, the land of fjords. Here I tasted Klippfisk – dried and salted cod, a traditional Norwegian dish. Paired with a mug of Aquavit, a Scandinavian spirit flavored with caraway or dill, this meal made me fall further in love with Scandinavian cuisine.

Ode to the Nordics

Whether you are a dedicated foodie, an enthusiastic traveler, or a casual reader, I hope this culinary trip around Scandinavia has elevated your interest to explore this wonderland. Far beyond the Ikea meatballs and clichéd frozen landscapes, Scandinavia’s unique cuisine reveals a deep connection with nature, history, and tradition. Oh, and by the way, if you have your favorite Scandinavian dish, be sure to drop a comment. Bon Appétit!
