Hey there, fellow travelers and photography enthusiasts! If you’re anything like me, always on the lookout for new ways to capture the world around us, then buckle up. Today, we’re taking our photographic journey to the skies! Quite literally, as we’re going to chat about drones and how they’re shaking up travel photography during our friendly little fireside-esque chat today.
Drones: A blessing from above!
When I first started my journey as a travel photographer, I always felt like something was missing. You can’t always capture the full beauty of a place from ground level, right? According to Wired magazine, that’s where drones come in, just like a superhero swooping in from the sky! They claimed that “drones have democratized the sky” (Wired, 2019), and I couldn’t agree more.
Remember the time when aerial shots were only for the big-budget companies? Now, thanks to drones, we all have a chance to delve into ‘aerial artistry.’ Yes, you heard that right! Whether you’re capturing Greece’s picturesque coastlines, the snow-covered peaks in the Alps, or sprawling metropolises that keep pulsating even when the sun goes down, drones can take your travel photography to a whole new level.
So how exactly are drones changing the travel photography game?
- Adding a new perspective: As a travel photographer, it’s all about capturing the essence of a place. Well, what better way to showcase that than by offering a bird’s eye view of the location?
- Reaching the unreachable: Let’s face it; we’ve all had moments where we just couldn’t reach a certain location. With drones, the impossible becomes possible!
- Increased creativity: Before drones, were we able to capture the perfect symmetry of skyscrapers or the cascade of a waterfall top-down? Absolutely not! Drones have fueled our creativity and given us a myriad of options.
One summer, I found myself in Santorini. Standing at the top of the hill, overlooking whitewashed structures spotting the cliff-face and the vast blue sea beyond… I knew the ground shots weren’t enough to do justice. That’s when my DJI Mavic Pro came to the rescue. I sent it soaring above, and just like that, I had captured the perfect overview of the beautiful island.
