How to Travel Solo Safely

Hey dear readers! So, you’ve chosen to embark on an exciting solo journey, huh? Just like I did a couple of years back. Let me tell you, it was one heck of an adventure loaded with fun, excitement, a bit of uncertainty and a few valuable life lessons on the way. But as they say, to win a game, you must first learn to play it. I learned quite a few tricks to travel solo safely, and I am here to share them with you. Bon, voyage!

1. Plan Ahead

The first step is, of course, planning. Picture this, I was in Rome and thought it would be a great idea to ‘wing it’. Imagine my surprise when I found out that popular attractions like the ‘Colosseum’ require pre-booking. I ended up shuffling my sightseeing schedule and booking a last-minute more expensive ticket. Lessons learned: Familiarize yourself with your destinations. Make a rough itinerary highlighting major attractions, know the opening hours, ticket prices, and reserve beforehand if required. Trust me, it saves a lot of time and avoids disappointments.

2. Stay Connected

Remember how Hansel and Gretel left breadcrumbs to find their way back home? While we can’t exactly do that, we have something better – tech! On my solo trip to Thailand, an offline map app happened to be my savior. With the best offline maps like Google Maps or Map.Me, you don’t need to worry about getting lost. Plus, keeping family and friends updated about your whereabouts is always a smart move.

3. Learn Local Customs and Etiquette

When in Rome, do as the Romans do. That old saying could not be more right. I recall, wearing sleeveless to a temple in Bali, unaware of their dress code, ended up hiring a local ‘sarong’ to get in. Brush up on local customs and etiquette to show respect and avoid uncomfortable situations.

4. Get the Right Travel Insurance

Once in Amsterdam, while enjoying the picturesque canals, I lost my laptop. Though it was unsettling, I had travel insurance, which covered the loss. Don’t underestimate the importance of good comprehensive travel insurance. It’s a lifesaver during thefts, health emergencies, trip cancellations, and other unforeseen situations.

5. Trust Your Instincts

Last but not least, trust your instincts. They might be your strongest defense. If something or someone feels suspicious, there’s no harm in stepping away. During my solo trip in Spain, my gut told me to refuse an offer from a seemingly genial stranger to show me around. Later, I heard about scams targeting solo tourists. Dodged a bullet there!

So, these are some of the lessons that my solo travels taught me. Enjoy your travels, but remember to make safety a priority. It’s the best way to ensure that your solo journey leaves you with pleasant memories to reminisce. Happy and safe travels!
