My love affair with UNESCO World Heritage Sites
There’s simply something magical in visiting places marked by centuries of human creativity and natural evolution. My love affair with heritage sites began when I was just a teenager on my first solo trip to Paris. The stunning artistry at Notre-Dame made me realize, “Wow, this place isn’t just old; it’s patiently stood here embodying history, ideas and evolution”
(UNESCO). Since that trip, I’ve been hooked, and I’ve decided to dedicate this post to some of my favourite UNESCO spots.
1. The Great Wall of China
The dragon’s back, spanning across vast terrains, is nothing short of breathtaking. It’s been a symbol of Chinese wisdom, power, and resilience for centuries
(UNESCO). My visit there was filled with mystical tales from the past, a fantastic workout, and some ‘can’t-believe-my-eyes’ views. Everyone needs to experience this humbling marvel.
2. Machu Picchu, Peru
From the world’s highest peaks to its deepest jungles, humankind has left their mark. Machu Picchu is one such mark nestled in the heart of Peruvian Andes
(UNESCO). When the morning mists clear over these ancient Incan ruins, it’s a sight you won’t forget; it’s a sight I haven’t forgotten. The journey through winding roads and climbing peaks is equally memorable. Lace up your best hiking boots for this one!
3. The Pyramids of Giza, Egypt
No UNESCO list would be complete without the only surviving Ancient Wonder of the World – the Pyramids of Giza
(UNESCO). Basking under the Egyptian sun and gazing up at the monumental pyramids, I felt transported in time. Standing beside the Sphinx, I stared into the eyes that have witnessed millennia. The experience is quite frankly, is unparalleled.
Wander and Remember
These UNESCO Heritage Sites aren’t just pretty places; they tell tales of our shared past, our ingenuity, determination, and love for expressing our inner thoughts on the world’s canvas. Whether it’s your first or fiftieth heritage site visit, every moment is a new story waiting to unfold. Happy travels, and don’t forget to respect and cherish these incredible remnants of our colourful past.
P.S. Remember, the world is truly our heritage, so let’s explore it responsibly.
